Date/time change for January's meeting

I was going through my calendar for 2014 putting dates in, and realized that January 11th is the date for the shower for my cousin's baby--so now the new plan is to move our Teen Advisory Board meeting to 7PM on Thursday, January 9th.  Jeanne and I are going to the Performer's Showcase in Fayetteville that morning, so it will be a great time to get input on some guests for the Summer Reading Program.  We'll also make plans for our Poetry Slam/Reading that will be the following Thursday (the 16th).  Hope to see you all there!

Last Saturday's meeting

Here's what we talked about at our meeting on Saturday the 16th:

*Our display for December will be TAB member picks--if you didn't make it Saturday and want to add a book for this (or even better, do a review for one), just let me know, and I'll make sure we have yours when I get ready to do the display.  Review sheets are on the last shelves in YA fiction and you can grab one and fill it out next time you're in the library--just give it to someone in Children's afterward.

*This morning (Monday), we finally got the first of our teen computers out and ready to use!  I shared the suggestions of those who came Saturday (book of the month, new releases, link to blog, YA events), with our IT guy, and he said he would be able to include those, hopefully over the next few days.  There are links to the PINES catalog, social networking, music, and homework help (those aren't the exact titles, but that's the jist of it), but if you have suggestions for additional content, let me know and I'll pass it along.

*The Summer 2014 theme is "Spark a Reaction"--if you can think of any workshops, crafts, etc., that fit that theme, let me know--Jeanne and I will be going to the Southeastern Performer's Showcase in early January and can be on the lookout for people who could incorporate some of those into our YA programming--maybe even before summer, if cost and participation would make it worth it. Same goes for topics for the photo or essay contests we do every year.

*There's also a statewide teen video contest for promoting reading, libraries, and/or the summer reading program--the prize is $250 for the library.  It's open to all teens 13-18, and one video can be submitted for each library system.  It needs to be submitted by February 14th at the state level--if you guys want to do one as a TAB, we should have plenty of time to get things together at our meeting on January 11th--be thinking of ideas and bring them with you.

*We've gotten a few more people to help us with the Christmas parade, so I don't think we'll need help with that--but watch for our float if you decide to go :)

*This week (November 18-23)the library is doing Fines for Cans--for every can (can't be outdated) donated, we'll take a dollar off your fines, up to $20.

Something to think about.....

Our next TAB meeting is Saturday the 16th, and then we won't meet in December because it's such a busy month, with parties and concerts and finals When we start back meeting in January, I think things will be a little slower, schedule-wise, for a lot of our members.  For that reason, I'm thinking about moving our meetings to a weekday evening, and have it as a fixed day (for example, the 1st Tuesday of every month--but I'm pretty flexible for either Tuesdays or Thursdays).  Having a set day will help everyone plan a little better if they can come or not (rather than rotating between the 2nd and 3rd week like we're doing now).  Also, I'm not actually scheduled to work Saturdays, and have a lot of events coming up in the spring--so if it works for you guys to move the day, that would be great :)

Check (or bring) your calendars so you'll know what's going to work for you--we may not be able to accommodate everyone's schedule every month, but I'll post what we discuss for each meeting on here, and we'll do what we can to get as many of you as possible in every month :)

Welcome to TAB!

Hey, hope all of you are doing well--it's a busy time of year and that doesn't seem like it's going to change until at least January--so I decided to create a blog to share what goes on at our monthly Teen Advisory Board meetings--so even if you don't make it to the meeting, you'll have an idea about what's coming up, and can put in your own two cents ;)

We had 6 people show up for our Game Night for Teen Read Week last Tuesday, but Craft Night didn't go over so well (nobody came to that one).  We had two at our Teen Advisory Board meeting on Saturday, both new, so welcome Madison and Kyle :) Here's what we talked about:

*NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month--lasts all of November)--Maybe doing a weekly writing time for an hour and a half or so on Thurs. evenings, so people could come in and get inspiration and help, or just set aside time to work on their writing.

*Movie Premiere Party--There are several movies coming out in Nov/Dec that would work well for this--maybe we could have some theme-related food and games and dress up as a favorite character--suggestions for titles, activities, and food would be great.

*Improv--Along the lines of Whose Line Is It Anyway?--an opportunity to think on your feet in acting out scenes or reacting to situations--maybe we could get a theater major from one of the colleges to help us out?

*Cooking class--We have a local chef who said he would be willing to do this--just simple things like making Ramen noodles into an actual meal--stuff you guys might actually do at this point when you need a quick meal.

*Genealogy--I could talk to Pat in the Heritage Room here at the library about doing this--this might be something for early 2014, since I think she only works late one night a week.

*Murder Mystery--If the game Clue came to life!

        *End-of-Finals Party--Probably Dec. 21

*Painting book ends--Paint book ends in the Young Adult section with quotes and cover art

*Activities the week after Christmas--movies, games, maybe the craft thing would work then too

       *Minute to Win It

*Paper-writing class--Definitely something you could use--and we could try to make it fun :)

*Christmas Card Balls--We want to make these to decorate the Children's Department, but it might also be something you can do as an individual craft.

These are just suggestions and ideas--nothing is set in stone, and if you have any other ideas, feel free to share!  If you have any ideas for publicizing these, share those too--I've been sending the information to the schools, but I'm not sure it's getting out there.  We'll also need help in the actual planning/set-up for some of the more complicated activities.

Also, if you haven't been to the library in awhile, come check out our revamped Young Adult area--we've got our shelves, computer counter, and tables in, and are hoping to get our new touch-screen laptops in sometime this week!  We've got one of our pieces of artwork from the schools, (there will be 7 total), and when they're all in, we'll frame them in metal and hang them above our countertops and wall shelf.

Next TAB meeting will be Saturday, Nov. 16th @ 1 PM in the Children's Department
